Smoke alarms save lives-but only if they are installed in the right locations. Proper placement ensures alarms activate early, giving you and your family time to escape safely.

Every home should have smoke alarms installed in the following areas:
  • Inside every bedroom
  • Outside sleeping areas
  • On every level of the home.
Inside Every Bedroom
fires can grow quickly while people are asleep. A smoke alarm inside each bedroom ensures occupants are alerted immediately, even with the door closed.

Outside Sleeping Areas
Install a smoke alarm in the hallway or common area just outside bedrooms. This protects occupants from fires starting elsewhere in the home.

On Every Level of the Home
Smoke alarms should be installed on every floor, including: basements, finished attics, and / or split level areas.

Best Placement Within Each Room
On the ceiling (preferred) keep at least 4" away from walls.
On the wall (if ceiling mount isn't possible) Install alarms 4-12 inches below the ceiling, avoid placing too low on wall.

Areas to Avoid
Smoke alarms should not be installed in these locations, as false alarms or delayed detection may occur.
  • Inside kitchens (install at least 10 feet away)
  • Bathrooms or near showers
  • Garages
  • Near windows, exterior doors, or air vents
  • In areas with high humidity or extreme temperatures
