Municipal Court

 
The Municipal Court serves the citizens of Bethany through the efficient processing of misdemeanor traffic and non-traffic offenses.

Charges may be filed by police officers, citizens, and other city officials such as animal control and code enforcement. Citizens are assisted in the municipal justice system by a part-time Judge, City Prosecutor, and an office staff of four full-time employees. The maximum penalty in the Bethany Municipal Court is $750 on certain specified offenses and $500 on all others.

If you have received a citation, the appearance date is for arraignment only. No testimony will be taken at the arraignment. If you are pleading guilty or no contest on all charges which do not require appearance before the Judge you can:

Enclose the hard copy of your ticket, check the appropriate box and sign on the back. Make your check or money order payable to the City of Bethany and mail to:

Tickets may be paid at the above address Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Municipal Court is closed weekends and holidays. For your convenience, during regular office hours tickets may be paid by Visa, Mastercard or Discover at the window.

After Hours


For payment of citations nights and weekends, there is a night drop inside the Police Department lobby. Follow instructions for payment by mail, and clearly mark your payment with a return address for receipt.

Probation/Deferred Sentence
If you are currently charged with a traffic offense and have not received any other traffic citations in the last three years, you may qualify for probation.

Insurance Ticket
If your insurance was in effect at the time you received your ticket and you show proof at the customer counter before your court date, the ticket will be dismissed without costs. If you purchase insurance after you receive your ticket, you must appear in court on your arraignment date.

Equipment Tickets
Certain vehicle equipment violations may qualify for fine reduction or dismissal. Call the Clerk's office for eligible violations and requirements.

Posting Bond
If you are pleading not guilty and wish to set a trial date, you must post bond on or before your arraignment date. In the event you are found guilty, fines and costs will be forfeited from your bond. If you are found not guilty, your bond will be refunded less court costs. The Fine Bond Schedule can be found HERE.

Courtroom Demeanor
Please address the judge as your honor or Madam. When you are asked to approach the Judge for a hearing of your case(s), do not lounge or lean on the bench. You may not appear in Court in shorts, tank tops, halter tops or bathing suits. Shoes are required attire. You should remove your hat or cap when you enter the Courtroom. Since space is limited in the Courtroom, we ask that you not bring small children or other family members with you unless necessary. If you are under the age of 18, one of your parents must appear with you.
